Hill swimming and diving has a long tradition of excellence. Many swimmers and divers have gone on to swim in competitive college programs and beyond, including the Olympics.
Our vision is to continue that tradition of excellence both in and out of the pool by developing competitive athletes who also are exemplary citizens of the community and the world. In addition to time in the water, athletes work on their strength and flexibility outside of the pool as well as their mental preparation for training and competition. The season is geared towards having the elite athletes perform at their best during the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships (Easterns), while having the rest of our swimmers peak at our Mid Atlantic Prep League Championship meet.

A 1984 Hill graduate, Coach Jay Spencer was a member of the swim team as a student at Hill. He returned to Hill in 2009 after retiring from the United States Navy and was an assistant coach for one season before taking over as Head Coach in 2010-11. Throughout his six seasons as head coach, several school records – many of which had stood for 25 or more years – were broken, and the teams gradually improved their standings at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championship with Hill’s boys’ and girls’ teams both placing as high as fifth overall. Additionally, Hill had two individuals and two relays win gold at Easterns under Spencer, breaking what had been a 33-year program drought. Coach Spencer departed Hill in 2016 then returned in 2019 and was an assistant for one season before re-assuming head coach responsibilities in 2021.
The Briggs S. Cunningham '26 Swimming Pool provides an excellent training facility for swimming. The six-lane pool is equipped with Kiefer lane lines, Colorado timing, angled starting platforms, two pace clocks, and two maxi-duraflex diving boards.
